Childish Gambino
VIMTV Album Review #416: Childish Gambino – Camp
Jake: Recommended, 67/100
Tom: Recommended, 69/100
Verdict: A decent rap album with a lot of great wordplay, but just as much inconsistency.
Overview: Childish Gambino’s first studio album is a very unbalanced one. The lyricism is brilliant, and Glover’s got a great flow, but sometimes the subject matter (and how he deals with it) is a bit offputting. Also, the production doesn’t help unify the album– in fact, it’s not very consistent at all. Still a pretty good album overall, but we feel like Glover needs to focus a bit before he makes something terrific.

Childish Gambino Interview

I love Camp, it has become one of my favouite rap albums ever. I agree, sometimes it’s immature, and kind of generic, but Glover is often ironic on this tracks, most notably “Bonfire”, but sometimes he is really honest, and he writes very moving lyrics. Most notably the tracks “Outside” & “That Power” are really powerful, the ending story is brillant. I Also like the production of the album, the beats which are really different track by track, with rock sounds on “Sunrise”, R&B on “Firefly”, Dubstep on “Heartbeat”, Violin on “That Power”… I really like his wordplays and pop culture references too. It’s just what I think of it.
I Wish a good year 2013 for VIMTV, I will still follow you
