VIMTV Episode #146: Godsmack – The Oracle
Jake: Recommended, 66/100
Tom: Recommended, 68/100
Overview: What a surprising relief. With little to no expectations from Godsmack, they have actually managed to release a relatively impressive album. The instrumentality is top notch all the way through– brutal bass, monster guitar riffs, and incredibly tight metal drumming. Even Sully Erna’s vocals feel less forced on the whole, despite the fact that he sounds more like James Hetfield than ever. Still, this album feels like it’s missing something– good lyrics is certainly one of those things, but another is a clear purpose. Godsmack is making some great, powerful hard rock, but it doesn’t seem to have much of a point. So if you’re wanting a deep listen, this isn’t for you. But if you want some quality headbanging material, The Oracle should prove to be a rewarding listen.
