Album Review #449: Islands – A Sleep and A Forgetting

Jake: 71/100

Tom: 75/100

Verdict: Recommended if you like singer/songwriter albums full of sadness and heartbreak

Overview: A Sleep and A Forgetting is a horrifyingly simple record when compared to previous Islands releases.  From the first sonic moments the listener realizes that this is a record of stone cold heartbreak.  Soul and doo-wop influences are crafted into a very minimal songwriting style; a stark difference from the chaotic electronic beats and electric guitars of the past.  You will have to connect with this record on an emotional level to truly appreciate it.  Otherwise their may not be enough content for you to chew on.

VIMTV Episode #83: Islands – Vapours

Jake: Recommended, 79/100

Tom: Somewhat Recommended, 75/100

Overview: Islands third release, Vapours, was heralded as a return to form to the band, a fact that Velocities in Music would like to dispute.  Vapours is much more driven by electronic elements and beats complimented by crunchy guitar which differs from old Islands albums which were filled with more instrumental melodies and drum parts.  Jake and Tom also think there is something missing from this album, that dreaded “X Factor” that makes and album addicting and repeat listens more attractive.
