John Frusciante
VIMTV Album Review #358: John Frusciante – Niandra Lades and Usually Just a T-Shirt
Jake: 84/100
Tom: 85/100
Verdict: Highly recommended if you like strange, lo-fi guitar music with a lot of odd rhythms and lyrics. Also, don’t form an opinion after only one listen.
Overview: John Frusciante’s solo debut is an album inspired by drugs and a severe reaction to the success that Red Hot Chili Pepper’s achieved in the early 90s. Despite these extreme circumstances (or perhaps because of them), Frusciante made an album that is as strange and difficult to listen to as it is beautiful and intriguing. The plain fact that he was able to make a 70+ minute long album where guitar is almost the only instrument is a statement in itself, but you have to listen to this monster of a record to truly understand.
