VIMTV Episode #130: Nappy Roots – The Pursuit of Nappyness

Jake: Recommended, 68/100

Tom: Recommended, 72/100

Overview: For their fourth studio album (second released independently and without founding member R. Prophet), Nappy Roots have remained more true to the positivity in their music than ever before. But while the lyrics stray even further from the mainstream of booze, boobs, and BMW’s, the beats have taken a significant step toward the mainstream. The outcome of this is that some tracks on this album are terrific; however, there are also some big misses. These disappointing moments are largely due to the production: at time the mix seems disproportional, the beats aren’t that of typical Nappy, and the songs don’t flow from one to another because of the variety of disjointed producers that contributed to the album. So while The Pursuit Of Nappyness certainly doesn’t stand up to their previous work, it does show that Nappy Roots are into rap for the long haul and for the right reasons.

VIMTV Episode #87: Nappy Roots – Watermelon, Chicken & Gritz

Jake: Highly Recommended, 87/100

Tom: Highly Recommended, 100/100

Overview: Coming from Kentucky, Nappy Roots brings a refreshing element to the rap scene by focusing their lyrics on country living, being poor, working hard, and staying true to yourself. While there’s the typical mentions of girls, booze, and cars, Nappy Roots makes rap sound real and personal in a way that had been lacking at the time of this album’s release. You may disagree with us, but we think this is one of the best rap albums ever made. Let us know what you think!
