Overview: The important thing to remember when listening to Familial is that, while it is the drummer of Radiohead, this doesn’t sound much like Radiohead, nor should it. Philip Selway draws on a lot of Nick Drake-esque vocal and guitar styles, and pulls it off quite well. This is quite minimalistic music and it has some depth and emotion to it, but it wears off a bit with more listens. The biggest problem with Familial is that it is too short and not quite varied enough, but the sound is still very good and Mr. Selway’s vocal, guitar, and songwriting abilities are impressive.
