VIMTV Episode #300: Slipknot – Vol. 3: The Subliminal Verses

Jake: Highly Recommended, 87/100

Tom: Highly Recommended, 97/100

Overview: Slipknot’s third album is surrounded by disagreement. Many fans felt that the slight drop in intensity marked the Iowa nine-piece’s descent into the mainstream, while others saw it as a heightened use in dynamics that proved the group’s artistic merit. At VIMTV, we are of the latter belief. Aside from the impressive dynamic contrast on this album, Slipknot demonstrates impressive songwriting chops overall; only a few tracks on this album adhere to a pop structure, and the songs that don’t are never self-indulgent epics that drag on for six minutes too long. For us, this makes a metal album that is worth listening to because it goes deeper than headbanging and grotesque imagery. Occasionally the lyrics are a bit tacky or lackluster, but it hardly prevents this album from doing its job: namely, kicking your ass in the best way imaginable.
